A Weight-Watcher’s Guide To Christmas Dinner

Eating Healthy at Christmas Dinner

Thanksgiving just passed and Christmas and New Years are right around the corner. Three holidays that involve excessive eating and drinking combined with happiness but also a little bit of guilt and body consciousness. Well, for all you weight-watchers out there, you shouldn’t shy away from your favorite food (like going meat-less) and you most certainly should not feel ashamed about your body. You just need to know what kind of foods and meats are healthier and leaner.

Poultry
For the absolute leanest piece of meat, skinless chicken or turkey breast is the answer. You want the white meat, not the dark meat of the bird. Believe it or not, the recommended serving size of either meat is a mere 3-4 ounces. 3 ounces of turkey contains about 110 calories, 25 grams of protein, and .6 grams of fat. 3 ounces of chicken contains just under 100 calories, 18 grams of protein, and 2 grams of fat.

Lamb
Look for the word “lean” on packaging labels. This sticker can be found on lamb chops and legs, as these are among the leaner and healthier types of lamb meat. Ground lamb (and any ground meat for that matter) will always have more fat.

Beef
All beef is considered red meat and as a general rule of thumb, red meat is fattier than white meat like chicken. Beef with a more marbled look is an indication of a greater fat content. Prime rib and t-bone steaks also have a higher fat content. Healthier beef cuts are flank and sirloin.

Seafood
Healthier seafood selections come from cleaner farms with sustainable practices or the wild. The environment greatly affects the outcome of the seafood and thus it’s nutritious levels. Some of the healthiest (and freshest) seafood options are wild Alaskan salmon and farmed oysters.

Pork
Loin chops and tenderloin are leaner and healthier pork meats than pork belly and ground lamb. The latter two have a relatively higher fat content. A 3-4 ounce serving of tenderloin contains about 150 calories and 6 grams of fat.
